2021 Piandorino IGT (Sangiovese Grosso), Pian dell'Orino

The Piandorino, the estate's entry-level Sangiovese, is fabulous. Bright, punchy and forward, with plenty of Pian dell'Orino's signature finesse, the 2021 is absolutely delicious today. It should drink nicely for another few years at a minimum.

Stylistically, Pian dell'Orino draws considerable inspiration from the wines of Gianfranco Soldera. The approach can be best described as one of minimal intervention in both the vineyards and cellar where the wines are aged mostly in large casks. Increasingly, the estate is moving to casks with thicker staves in order to minimize the impact of oxygen exchange. In addition to these wines, I also tasted all the other wines from cask, which reaffirms my view that Pian dell'Orino is the single most exciting young estate in Montalcino today.
